tomorrow bridget and i are off to paris for a long weekend (it was upgraded from 3 to 4 days after my boss suggested i take friday off along with monday - i love how vacation is seen as a right in europe). this is the first time we're taking advantage of our proximity to those crazy european countries, and we're chuffed (well i'm chuffed, bridget is wicked excited - ha!) to take the speedy train through the chunnel, go be silly tourists, eat lots of nutella crepes, and be mocked by the locals for our hazy knowledge of french. while i have traveled to england a few times for work in the past couple years, this will be my first time in mainland europe in almost _4_ years, and that's just far too long. we're staying at some cheap hole in the wall hotel near the eiffel tower - we'd hostel it but many of them seem to have curfews around 2am, and we'd rather not have to worry about that. in case you didn't realize, we're pretty crazy people.
paris was the first place i visited in europe, over 8 years ago now. i'm really curious to see how much i will remember of the city. looking at the street map brought back a few memories. when i came home from my first trip to paris all i could tell people about it was "everything was so big!" - not a very insightful comment but that's really what struck me from the city. i hope to have a more nuanced opinion after this weekend.
it's so wonderful to realize that this isn't just a one-shot occurance, we'll easily be able to travel all about on the weekends. for a few years i worked on the "one one-week vacation to europe per year" plan, the idea of zipping back and forth like this is pretty unreal. going to paris (and all sorts of other weekend destinations) will be new and exciting and fun and i've got a wonderful person to share all of this with, and that's just all sorts of awesome.
woo!
oh and bridget and i signed up for a 1 day trial of mlb tv to catch a bit of the sox game last night. while it's pretty sad that games during the week start at midnight local time, it really was fun and comforting to watch a bit of the game and see a place that i recognize as home. i think i can wire my laptop into the tv, which would make watching games a little more satisfying. it's $50 for the rest of the season, i think we'll break down and get it when we come back from our weekend away.
