you've been memed!
Dec. 3rd, 2003 12:00 pmwow i'm horribly bored and unable to focus on anything today. maybe this will be simple enough for me to deal with... jobs since 1987:
farmhand, 1987-1988
mostly just mowing lawns and yandwork, though i did get to go haybaling a couple times. such hard work for a 7th grader! lasted 2 summers. started at $2/hr, went up to $3 by the time i left.
gardener, 1989-1990
watered/weeded plants here, pushed wheelbarrows all over the place. $3.33/hr - outpacing inflation!
blueberry/raspberry picker, 1989-1994
my family raised plants and sold the fruit to local markets, along with making preserves and selling excess to a winery. currently we have ~800 blueberry plants and maybe 7000 sq ft of rasperries. i could make $12+/hr if i hustled. horseflies and sunburns were the downside. i actually used to be fairly tan! if i ever wanted to become i migrant worker, i have the experience.
clothes hanger sorter, 1990-1992(?)
perhaps the most unique job i've had. sorted metal clothes hangers at home, placed them in boxes. i'd usually do this on sunday afternoons while watching football. my dad worked at an industrial dry cleaners and would bring home whatever hangers he could. the job paid *really* well for a high school kid, around $15/hr. the only downsides were a) bruised thighs from straightening hangers, and b) the occasional run-in with one of these. ugh!
dishwasher/cook, 1992-1993
at the kozy kabin, a hometown greasy spoon if there ever was one. i got free cheeseburgers and french fries and soda and i was very impressed with the generosity. $4/hr.
bagel baker/counter help, 1992-1994
worked here during the summer. had to get up at 4.30am, usually worked 6am-noon. often times would come home and pick berries until dark. shudder. at least i made enough money to buy a decent stereo. also met ian a. ralph who is a nice guy and got me into babylon 5 but also very very weird.
college dining services, 1993-1997
started off washing dishes for 2 years, eventually became a manager. the only time i've ever had to manage people. even though the pay was bad (between $5.60-$8.20/hr), it was a lot of fun. basically every night involved food fights, much yelling, dancing to whatever music people brought (my mixtapes were legendary), stealing miniature m&m's, and lots of hard smelly work. as a manager your job was to keep everone's mind off of how gross their job was, so you basically just make conversation and do dumb stuff. proof that, somewhere deep inside me, i have an extrovert waiting to jump out. a great break from comp sci and ee life.
ice cream scooper, summer 1996
worked at the ice cream shop in davis sq. used to be the yogurt bar, then denise's ice cream. now it's one of the bigger boston chains (jp licks i think). my first summer living away from home. saved lots of money on food/caffeine. drank frappes with espresso shots and ate sundae toppings for dinner.
calculus grader/TA, 1996-1997
you got paid by the number of students in your class, so if you were speedy you could make a ton of money. grading homework while in my engineering classes was a fun multitasking experience.
lab TA, 1996-1997
one year i tutored students in fortran and autocad, the other year i got stuck in a weekday dinner slot. basically i sat in a lab by myself and wrote email/websurfed a few hours a week. didn't help a single person for 4 months. :\
ran on-campus coffee/snackshop, 1997
worked a couple hours a week so i could get free laffy taffy and mochas, and make that crucial extra $10/week.
applications engineer/DSP software engineer, 1997-2003
now i work here, where i get paid for writing posts like this.

Date: 2003-12-03 11:25 am (UTC)the worst for me was when they'd drop the bails into the barn via a conveyer belt and a hole in the roof. basically you'd be catching 40 lb scratchy rectangles. oof. glad i didn't wear glasses at the time. :)
