yesterday i found out that me and my buddies in the DSP music syndicate came in 3rd place at Vida 6.0. this is what we submitted. we're all pretty amazed since we felt like our project was clever and cute but it really didn't take much work and barely fit the submission requirements. here is a page with all the winners (we're about 1 page down). we won 1500 euros, which makes this all the cooler. sure glad the US dollar's worth is falling in the world market!

i'm even more excited for the next stage of our project. i think we've really got something here, and hopefully this bit of success will push us to get it done.

thanks! yeah it's funny because this is the first competition we've entered our collective work into (and the first art/tech competition ever for me). probably shouldn't get my hopes up that they'll all end this way. ;)

that camera is sweet! One of my best friends got that and the watertight case for it then took it white water rafting. Loved it

cool. since you're a DSC expert i was afraid that you'd have something horrible to say about it. thumbs up from you means a lot! :)

origianlly i was thinking of the coolpix 4300 (since bridget and co. love their 995s) but after playing with it in the store i was completely unimpressed. however, the a80 seems pretty ideal...

nope, I'm actually looking for a pocket digital and while I'm leaning more towards the canon S50 or SD10, the A80 is pretty damn awesome.

and I'm a big supporter of all cameras canon, especially over nikons (but thats only because I think Nikon can't design a user interface to save their lives)

hah victoria gave me a call at work and i told her that i can no longer say i'm in my mid-20's. she suggested i just say i'm in my 20's. works for me! :)

and that's awesome about the contest.

I would like one of these concrete music boxes. Do they come in orange? :)

Would it be financially viable to sell them on your web site?

define financially viable. ;) i think the cost of materials for making ~100 boards would be around $125 each. assembling one of them took maybe 4hrs. if we were doing an assembly line thing, we could make them in probably half the time. we'd need to be able to sell them for at least $200 for it to make sense. hard to say if we could get 100 takers at that price. i bet there are 100 people out there who would blow that kind of money for the novelty, but getting word out is the hard part.

hah don't worry once the xgamestation stops being vaporware and becomes realware we'll be all over it! along with gauntlet with physics, i can port my music development kit!

the term syndicate inspires all of these ideas of some DSP mafia, intimidating analog musicians and spreading the gospel of digitally processed music to the masses, whether they like it or not.

congrats and happy birthday!

and that's why we chose it! :) actually the name came from us visiting NY (how appropriate!) to show off an early prototype of our work at dorkbot-nyc. we were chatting with some people there about how we needed a name for our group. we were thinking along the lines of collective or collaberative. pretty lame and squishy, eh? someone said "dude you guys are a syndicate!", the proverbial lightbulb lit over all our ehads, and the name stuck.

congrats and happy birthday!
thanks and thanks! it is a happy birthday!

Congrats! I hope that the 1500 Euros can cover some of the cost of shipping a concrete block over to Europe...

heh in case anyone is wondering, it costs $110 to overnight a 6 lb concrete block to spain. it's coming home a much slower and cheaper method. ;)

i never saw the finished piece (had to leave while it was drying). i'm really looking forward to holding it in my hands and letting the concrete slab sing to me.

indeed! and thanks! now if we can just use this momentum to finish the "cd in hardware" project, i'll be even happier still. :)
