E--I have one or two lying around so grab mine before sending em. They are in my box of "stuff that must go to declutter and simplify my life" ...the problem is all these boxes are still cluttering up my life.
I am so buying this book once it ends up in the remainder bin, which it is totally destined for. $100?? I checked it out, this thing couldn't of cost more than $15 to print and package, maybe $20, and it is a collection of previously published work (meaning free content). MADNESS. This reeks of holiday gouging. They will make buckets of dollars :)
It *will* be $30...oh, it will. (If I sound convincing enough it'll happen, yes?)
E--I have one or two lying around so grab mine before sending em. sure, when we get together for male bonding on a sunday afternoon. you can also give me the security deposit. punk. :p

This reeks of holiday gouging. They will make buckets of dollars :) i dunno about this. it's seriously immense. i don't have any books nearly this big or heavy. and some book geeks are raving about the binding, but i know nothing about such things. $100 is a lot for any book, but at least it feels like you're getting a lot... oh and 1/4 of the content has never been published before, which may have cost them something... i could see $50-$60, but not $30.
there's also a $700 version with a leather binding. eep!
We published a 2,270 page, cloth bound book with coated paper at adams and it cost $17 to print AND deliver, and that's for printing in the US. This was most likely printed in Malaysia, meaning way cheaper.
And read carefully: 1/4 of the content has never been published in book form before---most likely it was either published in a newspaper or was never published because they weren't considered good enough. Larson didn't draw any of the comics in this book for this book.
Coffeetable books often start with a huge price, and end up plummeting once the initial sell-in is finished. Retailers get 55-65% discount on the cover price, plus will most likely get extra dollars for shelf placement and displays, once the holidays are over, the store will want to get rid of all but a couple copies, meaning either selling them at or below cost or returning them to the publisher. Returning to the publisher requires the individual store to pay for shipping plus the person power involved so they usually just mark the books down 75% and take the small loss to save a bigger one (plus they make huge profits on the ones they do sell).
