this is just the cutest, coolest, most endearing thing ever. the mental image of a little vw bus driving across a record, playing its little tune just makes me so happy.

I WANT THAT GORILLA ALBUM!

Also, I want that bus, I will replace the record needle with a xacto blade and put it on my enemies back's while they sleep.

hell, just put the xacto'ed bus on your enemies' records, that'd be cruel enough. :)

i was thinking it would be fun to hack this thing so it run at variable speeds. why play a record at 33 RPM when it could be played at 333 RPM?

it's *so* tempting. i'm going to see if i can find it domestically first.

i have no idea if it works well or eats records, but it's just too damn cool to pass up.

I think you two should tile a room with records and get a little Bus for each record...Oh! Maybe get the same record and have the buses play them with each having a few seconds of lag to the previous!

even better, break a bunch of records and glue them back together. watch the bus haplessly jump from record to record, groove to groove playing some sort of wacked out tune!

even getting two buses and doing your best to sync them would lead to some neat fx, since they probably aren't made of the highest quality and would play at slightly different speeds.

Putting two buses on the same record would also be neat.

I thought you were describing the A Kombi album of music made with a vw. Aquariusrecords.org sells it. Their description is

A KOMBI "Music To Drive By" (Dual Plover) cd 14.98
As featured in the latest Bananafish magazine, this Australian artist
created this cd using only the sounds made by a Volkswagen.

too bad the A KOMBI only comes out on cd. if the two ever met, not even the finest physicists at CERN could predict what would happen. but whatever occured, it would be special.

(i'm sure that clevernonsense will have something smarmy to say about the sounds he'd expect to hear from a vw... "is that the latest merzbow?" "nah, it's just what my golf sounds like on a cold winter's morning.")

I sooooo want now. It will give me an excuse to go looking for my record collection back in nj even. Just to see the bus go over my obscenely warped soundgarden loud live disc

maybe a bunch of us could each buy one and we could form some sort of avant-garde performance art group where we go into used record stores and start up impromtu dj parties. or we could take to the subways stations and put on little performances with our whirling buses.

that's pretty boss, but 96 bucks plus shipping strikes me as a bit pricey. avant-garde yes, but wallet-busting no.

*conflicted*
